Human rights and psychology: Human Rights activism in times of oppression, conflict, and crisis
Utrecht7 april, 17.30-19.00 hrs.
Utrecht University, Janskerkhof 3 Utrecht
Psychologists are increasingly engaging in human rights advocacy, incorporating human rights principles and standards in their work as the intersection between human rights and psychology is becoming more evident. Human rights and psychology not only share common values of protecting human dignity, wellbeing, and freedom but also psychological health is an integral component of the right to health. Moreover, apart from their legal implications, human rights violations, more often than not, have serious psychological consequences, including trauma. Consequently, psychologists play a vital role in advancing human rights—from engaging in advocacy and prevention to the rehabilitation and support of victims. On the other hand, human rights standards provide essential guidance for shaping and informing psychological interventions.
Against this backdrop, this interactive panel discussion, jointly organized by the Netherlands Institute for Human Rights (SIM) of Utrecht University, and the NIP (Dutch Institute of Psychologists, human rights network), features two distinguished experts with extensive experience in employing human rights and psychology to address issues, such as torture and ill-treatment, migration, oppression, and conflict. The discussions will explore how human rights frameworks can/should influence psychological interventions and the pivotal role psychologists play in promoting and protecting human rights in challenging contexts.
A collaboration between human rights and psychology brings the best version of human rights advocacy and this event will encourage experts and students from both fields to do so.
