Byron G. Adams is an Assistant Professor of Work and Organizational Psychology at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. He is also a Senior Research Associate at the University of Johannesburg in South Africa and a Visiting Professor at Ghent University’s Department of Work, Organization, and Society in Belgium. His research focuses on identity, diversity, inclusion, and well-being, emphasizing non-Western contexts, cultures, and groups. Some of his recent work includes exploring identity perspectives for non-Western groups and contexts in the book “Non-Western Identity: Research and Perspectives” (edited in absentia with Fons van de Vijver,†) and discussing the methodological appropriateness of our empirical tools in the book “Methods and Assessment in Culture and Psychology” (edited with Michael Bender). He is also currently the president of the Society for the Study of Emerging Adulthood, and he served on the Commission for Culture and Diversity at the Dutch Institute for Psychologists. He is also a practicing organizational psychologist currently focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) intervention in the medical field.

Evin Zorba is a clinical psychologist based in Rotterdam and a member of the NIP Committee for Culture and Diversity and Psychology. She is particularly interested in culturally sensitive mental health care and the psychological experiences of people navigating multiple cultural contexts. Zorba completed her MSc in Clinical Psychology at Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Her international academic experiences in Canada, the United States, Germany and the Netherlands shaped her interest in understanding how cultural background influences identity, relationships and wellbeing. In her clinical practice, she works transculturally with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. She has broad experience in the field and supports individuals facing challenges such as anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, identity questions and life transitions, including adjustment to new cultural environments. Within the committee, Zorba contributes her perspective on multicultural mental health and the importance of culturally responsive psychological care.

“Ik werk als universitair docent aan de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam, afdeling Psychologie.

Als onderzoeker heb ik vooral gewerkt aan meetinstrument ontwikkeling en adaptatie voor ouderen met een ander taal en cultureel achtergrond. Middels mijn PhD onderzoek hebben we de prevalentie van dementie onder migranten onder de aandacht gebracht en aan een Cross-culture dementiescreening gewerkt. Mijn onderzoek richt zich voornamelijk op vraagstellingen rondom (dementie)zorg. Ik ga graag samenwerkingen aan met diverse belanghebbende waarbij we elkaars kennis benutten.

Zowel binnen het vaardigheidsonderwijs als in mijn onderzoek komen mijn expertise en interesses terug: interculturele vaardigheden die we de toekomstige professionals willen meegeven, D&I in het bachelor curriculum.

Ik ben onderdeel geworden van deze Commissie, omdat ik graag op verschillende niveaus wil bijdragen aan ons vakgebied, meedenken met actuele dossiers, werken aan bewustwording rondom culturele sensitiviteit.”

“ Van huis uit ben ik A&O psycholoog en werk als ondernemer aan verschillende projecten. Na ruim 10 jaar in de IT sector te hebben gewerkt heb ik mijn eigen Mobile app startup opgericht. Maar bloed kruipt waar het niet gaan kan, en de studie A&O psychologie had ik niet voor niets gekozen. Ik mij de afgelopen jaren gespecialiseerd in het onderwerp diversiteit en inclusie omdat dit op meerdere manieren steeds terugkwam in mijn werk als vrouw van kleur in een overwegend witte mannen omgeving. Momenteel adviseer ik bedrijven m.b.t. hun Diversiteit, Inclusie en Gelijkwaardigheid-beleid én de implementatie hiervan. Als organisatiepsycholoog met expertise op het gebied van DIG zie ik dat naast het vergroten van de bewustwording over dit onderwerp, bedrijven worstelen met het implementeren van hun DIG beleid. Samen met hen inventariseer ik wat er nodig is om beleid zo vorm te geven dat het resulteert in een transitie van de organisatiecultuur waarin diversiteit en inclusie duurzaam zijn ingebed in een visie en strategie. Dit doe ik niet enkel met een A&O bril op maar ook vanuit een ondernemersperspectief. Ik hoop dat ik met mijn expertise die ik heb opgedaan in het bedrijfsleven, de commissie kan versterken.’
